Fort Wayne man pleads guilty in girlfriend's death

Posted: Updated:
FORT WAYNE -

An Iraq war veteran has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter after admitting that he beat his girlfriend to death with a baseball bat.

Forty-year-old Anthony Ochs of Fort Wayne was originally charged with aggravated battery and attempted murder for clubbing his 42-year-old girlfriend, Susan Lombardi, over the head with a baseball bat last April, leaving her with traumatic brain injuries.

The Journal Gazette reports those charges were upgraded to murder after Lombardi's family removed her from life support.

Defense attorney Randy Fisher said Ochs served three tours in Iraq and suffers from periodic blackouts.

Ochs' trial had been scheduled to begin this week, but he entered a plea that calls for him to be sentenced to 50 years in prison in exchange for prosecutors dismissing the murder charge.
