ExxonMobil begins its defense in gas additive case

Posted: Updated:
CONCORD, N.H. -

ExxonMobil has begun presenting its defense against claims it should pay hundreds of millions of dollars to the state of New Hampshire for the clean-up of groundwater contamination from a gasoline additive.

ExxonMobil is trying to refute allegations that it hid information about the environmental hazards of MTBE in the mid-1980s.

Jurors returned yesterday after spending six weeks hearing the state's witnesses. Former Department of Environmental Services Commissioner Robert Varney testified that he was "shocked" ExxonMobil did not share her findings with the state.

But a former engineer for the company testified Monday that the concerns were widely discussed in water quality and oil industry circles at the time.

Lawyers for ExxonMobil also contend MTBE did what it was supposed to - reduce air pollution.
