JOHNSON COUNTY -
One person died in a Monday night crash that closed Interstate 65 for more than seven hours Monday night in southern Johnson County.
Police confirmed that an occupant in a minivan involved in the crash shortly after 10 p.m. Monday had died at the scene. They say the van was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes north of Edinburgh when it struck a semi-trailer head-on, then caught fire and burned.
The driver of the semi was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The van driver was identified as Lee Wayne Oliphant, 67, of Indianapolis. Oliphant was pronounced dead at the scene by the Johnson County Coroner's Office. His family has been notified.
The driver of the semi-tractor, Mark A. Thornberry, 59, of Indianapolis, was transported to St. Francis Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
I-65 north and south bound lanes were closed while the crash was investigated and the wreckage removed. Haz-Mat teams were called to the scene to recover spilled oil and diesel from the wreckage.
Indiana State Police say all lanes of I-65 were back open as of 6:00 am. At one point, the interstate was closed in both directions at the 85 mile marker, south of Franklin.
Hazmat crews were called to the scene to clean up a fuel spill.
