TIPPECANOE COUNTY -
Shadeland's town clerk-treasurer was killed in a crash involving several vehicles Thursday night.
According to the Tippecanoe County sheriff, Peggy Vanschepen was driving a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am in the westbound lanes of State Road 25 West when her car was struck from behind by a Pontiac G6 driven by Sarah Pitts.
The force of the impact pushed Vanschepen's car into the eastbound lanes, where it was struck by Brent Wallace, who was driving a 1980 Chevy Camaro. The Camaro was pushed south and struck a Toyota Highlander driven by James Sims, who was stopped on County Road 250 West facing north.
Vanschepen was taken to St. Elizabeth East Hospital with chest pains and possible broken ribs. Her condition later deteriorated and she died at the hospital of internal injuries. Pitts and Wallace had minor injuries. Sims and a passenger were not injured.
Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the crash, which is still under investigation.
