JASPER COUNTY -
State police discovered hundreds of thousands of dollars during a traffic stop in Jasper County Thursday.
Senior Trooper Aaron Trammel stopped a 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe for traffic violations on I-65 northbound at the 225 mile marker. Trammel became suspicious of possible drug activity while talking with the driver of the car, 30-year-old Charles Allen and his passenger, 26-year-old Sivon Smith, both of California.
During a search of the vehicle, Trammel's K-9 partner "Ryker" alerted on the vehicle. With the assistance of an officer from the Hobart Police Department, Trammel discovered three suitcases in the truck, containing a total of $315,288.
One of the men said the money was from side jobs, but that it had never been claimed on taxes.
Allen and Smith were arrested on a felony charge of money laundering.
