BLOOMINGTON -

A southern Indiana attorney has been convicted of counterfeiting after investigators say he forged a signature to take $10,000 intended to go toward buying a golf course and deposited the money in his own bank account.

A Monroe County judge Wednesday ordered Phillip Chamberlain to pay restitution totaling $15,000 and to serve a suspended, 504-day sentence and 120 hours of community service.

The secretary of state's office says Chamberlain persuaded a client to loan $36,750 to another man to purchase a golf course, then split the money into two cashier's checks and took a $10,000 check for himself after forging the golf course's endorsement.

Authorities say Chamberlain wasn't authorized to raise money for the golf course and didn't have authority to endorse the check.
