United Way of Central Indiana has named Ann Murtlow as its new president.

Murtlow, who served nine years as chief executive officer of Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL), follows Ellen K. Annala, who is retiring March 31 after 23 years with UWCI and 15 as president. Murtlow takes over on April 1st.

Murtlow's hiring was ratifiedby United Way's board of directors following the recommendation of a selection committee which began its search last fall. Former board chair David Resnick (Katz, Sapper & Miller LLP) chaired the committee.

"We have a strong and effective United Way with a proud history," said Samuel L. Odle, chair of United Way's board of directors. "Ann will help take us to the next level. She knows our community and is passionate about United Way's mission. And, as a respected CEO, Ann will help enhance and grow our community collaborations to address and reduce local human needs."

Murtlow was one of a few female chief executives in the electric utility industry. Since leaving IPL, Murtlow has operated an independent consulting firm offering strategy, operations, management and leadership advisory services to businesses and nonprofits.

"If our region is to thrive, we need a turn around to ensure that more kids are succeeding, more people are working and more families are stable," said Annala. "United Way is committed to these goals. What is perfect about Ann's selection is she knows that helping people thrive is directly related to our community's economic development progress. And she has the know-how, the experience and the love of our community to lead us."
