Top speed for the Bell 407 is 140 knots or 161 mph. We are however, limited to 120 knots or 138 mph with the Cineflex HD camera installed. Either way, we're about 25 m.p.h. faster than the competition. Spot news is big business and we like to get going before the competition does to ensure that you will see it first on 13 Eyewitness News.
Sony makes the camera body in the Cineflex V14 HD, and the lens is a made by Fujinon. The stunning video in the BBS series "Planet Earth" was shot with a V14. NBC Universal also uses the Cineflex. This particular unit was used to shoot most of the video for the reality show "Survivor."
During the Sunrise show, we normally fly with a crew of two, pilot and photographer. Sometimes we will have a reporter in the back seat as the third crew member during special events such as the Indy 500, mini marathon, and major breaking news. The internal cameras are also HD.
Our lead pilot is Butch Bates. Brian Miller and Luke Harper are part-time pilots for Chopper 13 HD.
