2013 Indianapolis Air Show canceled

INDIANAPOLIS -

Nationwide budget cuts will have a direct impact on a popular central Indiana air show.

The looming threat of budget cuts - known as sequestration - has prompted organizers to cancel the 2013 Indianapolis Air Show. The show was scheduled for June 15-16 at Indianapolis Regional Airport near Mt. Comfort.

The US Navy Blue Angels had been scheduled to appear as the show's jet team headliner. Under sequestration, US military jet teams are grounded until further notice, and additional military support for air shows is suspended as well.

"Due to budget uncertainties resulting from the threat of sequestration and its impact on military participation at our show, all of which are beyond our control, we have been forced to make the very difficult decision to cancel the 2013 Indianapolis Air Show," said Robert Duncan, chairman of the show's executive committee.

Duncan noted that several other air shows throughout the nation also have canceled their events for this year, citing sequestration as the reason.

Air show organizers say they're looking at ways to bring back the show in the future.

Hundreds of volunteers participated in the air show, and proceeds from the fundraiser resulted in more than $1.3 million being donated to local philanthropic organizations like the Central Indiana Community Foundation.

More than 82,000 fans attended the 2012 event.
