INDIANAPOLIS -

The businessman behind the renovation of the popular stretch of Massachusetts Avenue stores has died.

Our newsgathering partners at the Indianapolis Star report Harry Stout, president of Stout's Footwear on Mass Ave., died Thursday at the age of 89. Stout's father opened the shoe store in 1886.

The newspaper says Stout's decision to turn the small building next to his family's store into an art gallery and apartments in 1984 spurred the redevelopment of the avenue.

Stout's son, Brad, joined the family business in 1982. He and his wife, Stephanie, now run the original store, along with three other locations around central Indiana.
