Ja Rule released into federal custody

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, N.Y. -

Ja Rule is out of prison -- and in jail.

Ja Rule left a prison in Albany, New York, yesterday after serving most of his two-year sentence for illegal gun possession. U.S. Marshals escorted him to the Oneida County Jail, where he awaits word from the Federal Bureau of Prisons about where he'll serve the rest of his sentence for tax evasion.

He had served the two sentences concurrently. Defense attorneys say Ja Rule may have less than six months left in the tax evasion sentence and may be eligible for a halfway house. Prosecutors say they don't know if Ja Rule paid the $1.1 million he owed the IRS.
