Ice, sleet mix catches some central Indiana drivers off guard

HENDRICKS COUNTY -

It was slow going on US 40 in Hendricks County Thursday night with stalls and accidents on and off the road.

We spotted a car in the ditch off I-70 near the Plainfield exit, and in just a few miles we saw two more of those.

For road crews in Hendricks County it will be a long night trying to keep up with wind-driven snow and sleet blowing back across their roads, but the evening didn't start all that badly.

We started the night at US 41 and I-70 in Terre Haute. It began as a light snow. Then the wind came up. That's when we hit the road heading east.

At Cloverdale after dinner time, the sun was down and the ice scrapers and snow brooms came out.

"I'll probably be stuck down here tomorrow if it gets as bad as they say," said one driver, pulling off at the Cloverdale.

By now the quality of the snow had changed from what first fell in Terre Haute to gritty granules - like sleet.

"The freezing rain hitting my face and it's kind of sharp especially when it gets you in the eyes," said Heather Good.

At the Cloverdale truckstop, truckers were pulling off the roads.

One westbound driver told us, "I'm staying right here tonight not going to risk it no." "might be black ice out there and stuff you can't see that kind of thing at night."

Over 150 closings or delays were being reported as of 10:30 pm Thursday.

That trucker got word that other trucks in his fleet had already wrecked in Missouri this night.

Back on I-70 still heading eastbound, INDOT plows were hitting the road. We saw them, but snow driven by wind covered the lanes back up again. We were afraid to go more than 40 miles an hour.

Coming into Cartersburg on US 40 we saw stalled cars, county plows working hard at it but knowing the worst icing could still be just down the road, it would be a long night ahead.
