Nike says it has suspended the contract of Oscar Pistorius.
Pistorius, the first double-amputee runner to compete on the track at the Olympics, is facing a charge of premeditated murder in South Africa in the Valentine's Day slaying of his girlfriend.
In a brief statement announcing the contract suspension, Nike says "we believe Oscar Pistorius should be afforded due process and we will continue to monitor the situation closely."
Pistorius is a multiple Paralympic medalist, but he failed to win a medal at last year's London Olympics, where he ran in the 400 meters and on South Africa's 4x400 relay team.
Nike dropped Lance Armstrong in October 2012, but stood by Tiger Woods after he admitted to infidelities and went to rehab for sex addiction.
Meantime, the head of South African police has appointed a new lead investigator in the case.
National Commissioner Riah Phiyega says Lt. Gen. Vinesh Moonoo will take over the investigation.
Phiyega says the Pistorius case "shall receive attention at the national level" and Moonoo will "gather a team of highly skilled and experience detectives."
She says Moonoo is the South Africa police's "top detective."
South Africa's National Prosecuting Authority acknowledged that the timing of attempted murder charges against the police detective originally leading the investigation into Pistorius was "totally weird" and that he should be dropped from the case against the world-famous athlete.
Police said Thursday that Hilton Botha, who gave testimony Wednesday opposing Pistorius' application for bail, faces attempted murder charges in connection with a 2011 shooting incident.
Police said Botha and two other police officers had fired at a minibus and will appear in court in May to face seven counts of attempted murder.
