Winthrop selects Butler provost as new president

ROCK HILL, S.C. -

Winthrop University has selected a new president despite concerns from some faculty members about her involvement with a libel lawsuit at her previous school.

The school's Board of Trustees on Friday unanimously chose Jayne Marie Comstock as Winthrop's 10th president.

Winthrop started the search after Anthony DiGiorgio said in March 2012 that he would retire this June.

Some faculty members said Comstock shouldn't be hired because she was involved in a libel lawsuit against a blogger at Butler University in Indianapolis, where she was provost and vice president of academic affairs before she went on leave.

Comstock has said Butler's confidentiality policy prevents her from discussing the lawsuit.

The blogger targeted Comstock and other Butler administrators. The university dropped its lawsuit when the writer revealed he was a Butler student.
