House budget adds $1.5B for schools, roads

INDIANAPOLIS -

Indiana's House Republicans are adding $1 billion in more money for roads, schools and other priorities to a relatively Spartan budget delivered by Gov. Mike Pence last month.

A copy of the House balance sheet obtained by The Associated Press Thursday shows Republicans seeking $562 million more than Pence in the first year of the budget and $476 million more in the second year.

Republican House Ways and Means Chairman Tim Brown is scheduled to release more details on the budget Friday morning.

Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma said earlier Thursday that the plan restores large cuts made to education during the recession and pays more for road construction and repairs. The House plan would also speed up the phase-out of the state inheritance tax.
