It's Thursday, so the Columbus North boys basketball team practices in Gym 1 after school. That's the bigger, main gym. The girls practice next door in the smaller, auxiliary Gym 2. The boys don't get preferential treatment. The girls take Gym 1 on Monday, Friday and Saturday. The boys get the big gym on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The teams share the gyms, and they are sharing the attention in Columbus, with both teams enjoying terrific seasons.
"We take basketball seriously here," said senior Hanna Ballard. "We really work hard every year. I think the boys will be successful this year. Hopefully, we will be too."
The Columbus North girls and boys basketball teams have lost just one game all season combined between the two teams.
The girls are undefeated (25-0) and ranked number one in Class 4A. The Bulldogs play at undefeated Bedford North Lawrence in the regional on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Last year, the girls advanced all the way to the state final before falling to North Central in overtime, 50-48.
The Bulldog boys are 19-1. Their only loss was at Pike December 14, when they lost 76-74 on a last second shot. The boys host Bloomington North Friday at 7:30 p.m. on Senior Night. The boys' team has eight seniors.
"I don't think we could say who's better," said senior Sawyer Glick. "(The girls) are number eight in the nation, so it's kind of hard to compete with that. I think we're both having fun. We take a lot of pride in it. I know the school does. Everyone is excited about the tournament coming up."
"The boys come to a lot of our games," says Ballard. "We go to a lot of their games. You pass them in the hallway. They say good luck. We tell them good luck."
