WHITELAND -
An apparent engine fire damaged three semi-trailers in the Pilot Travel Plaza lot on Whiteland Road off Interstate 65 early Thursday morning.
Whiteland and Needham fire crews were called around 2:30 a.m.
They say a driver from Floyds Knobs hauling a load of mayonnaise was sleeping in the cab of his rig when he heard a popping noise and discovered fire in the engine area.
The driver tried to put out the fire with a portable extinguisher, but lost control of the blaze.
By the time the fire was completely out, around 4:00 a.m., the cab was completely burned, but the trailer and its load sustained minimal damage.
Two trailers parked on either side of the mayo truck were also slightly damaged.
