Truck crashes into Broad Ripple building

BROAD RIPPLE, Ind. -

A crash involving a utility truck closed College Avenue in Broad Ripple overnight, and heavily damaged a popular seasonal business.

Johnny's Market is familiar to the Broad Ripple area for tomatoes in the spring, and Christmas trees over the holidays. So many will be shocked to see what happened shortly before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The driver of an IPL bucket truck told police he blacked out while traveling south on College Avenue, crossed the northbound lanes and struck the building at Johnny's Market on the east side of the roadway.

The driver was alert at the scene after being trapped in his vehicle for a short time. An IPL spokesman says the driver was taken to Methodist Hospital for treatment of what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Neighbors heard the crash. "My house is literally shaking," said Shad Stout. "I come outside and the power cords are sparking."

James Begg lives in a nearby apartment building, and said his whole building shook. "And right then - a loud bang - and right when that happened, I thought at first a gun shot."

John Deuser, who owns the market, said he was "devastated" once he surveyed the damage overnight, and he said it will take a lot to get ready for business this spring. "I thought of corner damage, a few sheets of plywood, fix it up, a little paint. I didn't think the whole building would be down."

To add insult to injury, Deuser's building was just remodeled last summer after another accident, and it was leveled again on his 30th wedding anniversary.

College Avenue was closed in both directions near 63rd Street after the crash. The road remained closed until 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.
