Marion County, July 30 - Thirty-four-year-old Jason Collins is the latest victim in a string of shootings in Indianapolis. Police found his body riddled with bullets early Friday morning near Medford and West 12th Street.
There's no motive or suspects yet, but investigators say these days murders like these often share a tragic theme.
"Probably 75 to 80 percent of our murders involved drugs in some way or the other," says Indianapolis Police Captain Robert Snow.
"We are sick of black on black crime. It's time to throw down our guns, stand down, hatred against one another,"said Pastor Bennie Shore at a peace march last Saturday which called for an end to the violence.
It didn't work.
Haughville residents mourned the death of 26-year-old Tremayne Chatman, found shot near West 10th Street on July 21.
On Sunday July 25, 20-year-old Markifie Sears was shot in the 2700 block of North Adams.
Tuesday July 27, 53-year-old Louis Mingo was found shot in the 4400 block of North Caroline.
On Wednesday July 28, someone shot and killed William Kelly in the 3100 block of North Guilford.
That same day, police found 22-year-old Tyrece Hardiman shot to death in a ditch along the 2700 block of North Adams.
Those are in addition to Collins' death.
It's a disturbing trend that Captain Snow says puts pressure on the force. "A lot of my detectives are working on one or two previous cases, and then they get a new case. So it basically compounds their work."
