Wayne County Sheriff Jeff Cappa confirmed that an Indianapolis couple died after their car caught fire on I-70 Sunday afternoon.
According to the sheriff, the car was traveling westbound on Interstate 70 just west U.S. 35 intersection just after 3 p.m. Sunday when the car caught fire.
There were four occupants in the vehicle and one them was using oxygen. One of the other occupants lit a cigarette causing the oxygen to ignite.
The car pulled into the median and it became fully engulfed in flames.
Two of the occupants, identified as Ronnie and Deborah Pratt of Indianapolis, both 62 years old, were unable to get out of the burning car and were killed.
The other two people were able to get out but did suffer injuries. One was transported by air ambulance to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. The other victim was transported to Reed Hospital in Richmond where they were treated and released. The names of the survivors are not being released pending identification of the two victims who died.
The westbound lanes of I -70 were closed at the U.S. 35 exit for almost three hours. The eastbound lanes were closed briefly while the fire was being put out.
