Hundreds turn out to mourn former Indiana bishop

Posted: Updated:
FORT WAYNE -

Scores of robed priests marched down the aisle of a cathedral in Fort Wayne as more than 1,000 people gathered to mourn the death of Bishop Emeritus John D'Arcy.

A nearly two-hour funeral Mass for the 80-year-old priest was held Friday at Fort Wayne's Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

D'Arcy led the Fort Wayne-South Bend Roman Catholic Diocese for 24 years before retiring in 2010. He died last week of cancer.

A steady stream of people filed past the open casket where D'Arcy lay clad in purple vestments. Many of them knelt to pray or touched his hands or face.

Ruby Ferroli of Elkhart tells The Journal Gazette that D'Arcy was a "wonderful priest" who "lived the faith and taught the faith."
