Muncie levee repairs could carry $1M pricetag

MUNCIE -

Muncie is planning to spend $1 million to repair and improve its aging White River levee.

The Star Press of Muncie reports the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have set the standards for the levee. Investigations completed in 2009 and 2012 found that aging stormwater pipes, an unauthorized residential garage and trees weakened the levee.

Muncie Sanitary District administrator Bill Smith says the levee improvements will be paid for with stormwater management fees paid by property owners to the county. The project is not expected to cause an increase in fees.
