Indiana bar takes in $200K in Super Bowl bets

SCHERERVILLE -

Indiana State Excise police say a northwestern Indiana bar took in more than $200,000 in bets on the Super Bowl involving about 400 people.

Corporal Travis Thickstun, excise police spokesman, said Monday that Spike's Lakeside Inn in Schererville faces three preliminary charges: being a public nuisance by promoting professional gambling; failure to maintain good character and reputation; and violating the scope of a type II gaming endorsement.

Paul Stracci, attorney for bar owner David "Spike" Jaroszewski, told The Times of Munster and the Post-Tribune of Merrillville he had no comment because the investigation is ongoing. Thickstun says people who placed the bets could face misdemeanor charges of unlawful gambling.

Thickstun says a representative of the bar turned over $204,367 to state excise police on Monday.
