INDIANAPOLIS -

The Indiana State Department of Health says the number of flu deaths in Indiana has risen to 44.

The new total is up one from 43, which was reported one week ago, on January 28.

Flu Q&A here.

At least 36 of the deaths have occurred in patients 65 and older. Two have occurred in younger than 18 years and five have occurred in age 18-64 years. At least 38 had underlying medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, asthma and renal disease.

Health officials say your best protection against the flu is a flu shot, staying away from sick people, frequent hand washing and practicing healthy habits like getting enough sleep and eating a balanced diet.
