Following a recent article which reports that more doctors are recommending a specific weight-loss program aimed at diabetes prevention, fitness expert Lorna Kleidman offers her thoughts.

On February 4, 2013,kettlebells trainer Lorna Kleidman responds to a recent article on a diabetes prevention program that uses exercise and nutrition to help people avoid Type 2 diabetes.
According to an article from the Los Angeles Times, “a 12-week program aimed at preventing Type 2 diabetes by getting obese adults to shed as little as 10 pounds and exercise for a little more than 20 minutes a day.”
The program, entitled the Diabetes Prevention Program, is a part of President Obama’s Affordable Care Act which, reports the article. According to the Los Angeles Times, the program sets reasonable goals for its students, such as losing five to seven percent of body weight, getting 150 minutes of exercise each week and tracking food intake to avoid unhealthy meals.
The article adds that “[in] nearly 30 clinical trials, scientists have established that the program is far more effective at helping people lose weight and prevent or delay the onset of diabetes than ‘usual care.’” The term “usual care” refers to the tendency for many doctors to just tell patients they need to lose weight and not recommend an actual weight-loss program.
“I cannot stress enough the power of actually taking part in a program or taking a class with a trainer,” said fitness expert Lorna Kleidman. “It gives you so much more motivation than just going to the gym by yourself.”
Kleidman adds that the Diabetes Prevention Program, while a wonderful option,is not the only way for people to avoid Type 2 diabetes. Kleidman states that utilizing other fitness classes – such as yoga, spinning or kettlebells – can be effective as well.
“These classes may not be specifically tailored for people who are attempting to avoid diabetes, but with the proper nutrition they can be excellent for a person’s health,” Kleidman said.
Lorna Kleidman is a Three-Time World Champion and World Record holder in kettlebell sport and the most decorated kettlebell athlete in the country.
