WEST TERRE HAUTE -

The state Department of Natural Resources reports a couple who fell through the ice in a wildlife area near Terre Haute was rescued after spending more than 90 minutes in frigid water.

The Vigo County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call about 6:40 p.m. Saturday from a man seeking help because he and his girlfriend had fallen through thin ice while taking a walk through the Wabashiki Fish and Wildlife Area near West Terre Haute. Firefighters from Sugar Creek Fire Department and an Indiana conservation officer responded and found 21-year-old Brennan Chandler of Terre Haute and 21-year-old Arica Wellman, a student at Indiana State University, chest deep in water.

The couple was conscious and alert but could not move. They were brought to hospitals and treated for hypothermia.
