Taxing times leave LaPorte Co. short millions

LAPORTE -

Schools and local governments in northwestern Indiana are short millions of dollars in needed revenue because of a tax situation that officials hope to turn around this year.

The LaPorte County Herald-Argus reports that late and uncollected property tax payments since 2008 have left LaPorte County's largest school systems owed a total of $31 million. The city of LaPorte is owed up to $8 million.

County Treasurer Nancy Hawkins says tax property collections have been about 10 percent below normal since 2007.

Some school districts have been forced to borrow money to meet salary requirements.

County officials who have been sending out provisional tax bills for the last six years say they hope to solve the problem by the end of the year.
