A Carmel man is accused of trying to hire a co-worker to kill his estranged wife.

Police say 27-year-old Stephen Perry told a co-worker he wanted his estranged wife dead.

The man thought Perry was joking, but last month, he recorded two conversations with Perry on the cell phone.

Perry allegedly offered him $15,000 to kill or arrange for his wife's murder. The co-worker gave the recordings to Perry's wife, who turned them over to police.

The wife told police the two are in the middle of a divorce and are $200,000 in debt, mostly because of her living expenses and college tuition.
