Indiana man gets 80 years in roommate's slaying

LAFAYETTE -

A 21-year-old Indiana man has been sentenced to 80 years in prison for the beating death of a roommate whose acid-soaked body was found buried in a shallow grave.

Darren J. Englert apologized Tuesday to relatives of 26-year-old Jeremy K. Gibson before he was sentenced by a Tippecanoe County judge on charges that included murder and conspiracy to commit criminal confinement.

A jury convicted Englert in November in Gibson's July 2011 killing. The Journal & Courier reports Englert is planning to appeal.

Prosecutors said Englert and two other people who had been living with Gibson's Lafayette apartment killed him following an argument. His body was buried in a shallow grave and the trio later returned and poured acid onto Gibson's body, leaving him unrecognizable.
