LAFAYETTE -

A Chinese man visiting his daughter in Lafayette was killed in a car crash Tuesday afternoon.

Police say Ning Zhu, 23, was driving east on SR 38 East when she began slowing in the left lane for an unknown reason. Jeffrey Brand, 21, of Lafayette, was driving behind Zhu and told investigators he was looking at the console area of his truck and did not notice Zhu slowing down.

Brand's Ford F-150 rear-ended Zhu's car, pushing it into a lane crossover area, stopping in the westbound lane. Brand's truck came to rest in the crossover area.

Zhu's father, 53-year-old Jianping Zhu, who was visiting his daughter from China, was pronounced dead at the scene. Both Zhu and his daughter were wearing seatbelts.

Ning Zhu was taken to St. Elizabeth East. Brand refused medical treatment at the scene.

Both drivers were tested for alcohol and drugs as required by law. Those results are still pending.

The crash closed SR 38 East for more than two hours.
