INDIANAPOLIS -

A lot of people make New Year's resolutions - to lose weight, get the taxes done before the last minute and even pledge to finally get organized.

In Tomisa Stagg's kitchen, you can find just about anything to fix a meal. But getting to the appliances and ingredients is a challenge.

"I had it in the back of the corner, behind the refrigerator and every time I needed to use it, I had to go dig somewhere or I couldn't find it," Staggs said.

"I think all of us can admit to having some area of their house that is a little more cluttered than it should be, but the key here is finding out whether you can fix it yourself or whether you need to hire someone and what are the steps to get it resolved," said Angie Hicks, Angie's List.

Professionals say the most disorganized areas of the home are the bedrooms, closets, and garages. Paper is the biggest contributor to the clutter.

That's why you need to throw away junk mail as soon as it comes in. Also, organize bills by the order they are due and establish one place to store the important documents.

If you think you can't get cleaned up on your own, ask around for references for a professional organizer. You can pay them based on how much you want cleaned.

"If it's a whole house organization, especially if it's a chronically disorganized person, then it's going to be a project cost. If it's a smaller job, like a pantry or a closet, then we're going to charge by the hour," said Carrie Bell with Extreme Organize, LLC.

Hourly costs can vary between $35-100 per hour. For Skaggs, it was money well spent.

"So if you can save some steps, I mean, those steps add up to minutes, which add up to hours, which add up to more time you can spend with your family," she said.

If you go with a professional organizer, be sure to ask where they'll dispose of your unwanted items. If it's important to you that they're donated or recycled, make sure you let them know.
