Bloomington caregiver arrested in woman's death

BLOOMINGTON -

Southern Indiana police say a man who served as a caregiver for a Bloomington woman with cerebral palsy has been arrested following her alleged neglect-related death.

Fifty-two-year-old Kenneth E. Aker Jr. was arrested Saturday on a preliminary neglect charge after the woman died from cardiac arrest at a Bloomington hospital about an hour after Aker called for an ambulance. He's being held at the Monroe County Jail on a $20,000 surety bond.

Bloomington police Sgt. Lucas Tate tells The Herald-Times the 53-year-old woman was bedridden, wheelchair bound and was underweight with deep bed sores nearly "down to the bone." He says the woman had been under Aker's care for several years through a local service called LifeDesigns.

LifeDesigns spokeswoman Susan Rinne declined to comment on the woman's death.
