Evansville stadium trusses collapse during razing

Posted: Updated:
EVANSVILLE -

No one was injured when 16 connected steel trusses collapsed during demolition of Evansville's Roberts Stadium.

City-County Building Authority Director David Rector tells the Evansville Courier & Press that the trusses had been expected to come down one-by-one Friday, but the structure collapsed all at once.

Rector says workers were torching through the sixth individual beam when the mishap occurred. He says the demolition remains on budget and on schedule. Officials in the Ohio River city say the razing and land refill could be complete by early May.

The city plans to build a park at the site in the next few years.

The 56-year-old arena was shut down after the new Ford Center opened downtown last year.
