Cancer-stricken retired bishop returning to Indiana

FORT WAYNE -

The retired bishop of the Fort Wayne-South Bend Catholic Diocese has returned to Indiana to continue his battle with a rare form of cancer.

Bishop Emeritus John D'Arcy issued a statement Friday saying it was "it's good to be home" after undergoing radiation treatment in Massachusetts.

D'Arcy announced early this month that he had been diagnosed with cancer in his lungs and brain. The disease was discovered when he went to a Boston-area hospital after feeling ill while visiting relatives.

The 80-year-old D'Arcy was treated for prostate cancer in 2011. He retired in 2010 after leading the diocese for 24 years.

D'Arcy thanked current Bishop Kevin Rhoades and those in the diocese for their prayers.
