INDIANAPOLIS -

School administrators approved a severance package for retiring IPS Superintendent Dr. Eugene White Thursday.

The board agreed to a package that will pay White $619,121 through 2018. That total could increase, based on unused sick or vacation time.

"Based on the terms of Dr. White's contract, and through discussions during the past week, both the board and Dr. White have agreed on this separation agreement. We now turn our attention to the future," said Diane Arnold, President of the IPS Board of School Commissioners.

"I appreciate the board working quickly to reach this agreement," said Dr. White.

The board voted 5-1 to approve the package, with board member Mike Brown as the only vote against.

"I respect Dr. White's decision to retire, however, I'm the one who made the motion who brought him here as superintendent. I feel like there's still a lot of work that needs to be done," Brown said.

White announced his intention to retire earlier this month. The board unanimously accepted his request, effective April 5.
