INDIANAPOLIS -

Indiana First Lady Karen Pence is expected to make a full recovery after gall bladder surgery.

Pence underwent emergency surgery Thursday after experiencing pain a day earlier. Surgeons at St. Vincent removed her gall bladder in an outpatient surgery. She was released from the hospital Thursday afternoon.

Governor Mike Pence canceled a planned trip to southern Indiana to stay with his wife. The governor had been scheduled to attend events Thursday in Jeffersonville and Evansville, followed by a speech Thursday night at a Greater Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce dinner.

"Karen and I are both grateful for the prayers and concern expressed by so many Hoosiers over the past 24 hours and for the professionalism of the medical personnel who diagnosed and performed her surgery. We are all fortunate to have such dedicated health care professionals serving the people of Indiana," the governor said in a statement.

Mrs. Pence will recuperate at home over the weekend. She is expected to resume her scheduled activities next week.

The Pences have been married since 1985 and have three grown children.
