HAMMOND -

A federal judge has sentenced a former Lake County Sheriff's Department officer to two years in prison for conspiring to use his position to purchase machine guns and laser sights reserved for law enforcement or military officials and then reselling them for profit.

The Times of Munster reported that Edward Kabella of Crown Point had pleaded guilty to being involved in the scheme in October 2011, along with a charge of underestimating his income on a tax return.

U.S. District Court Judge Joseph Van Bokkelen told Kabella he had betrayed the public's trust.

Kabella is required to report to prison on March 20.
