INDIANAPOLIS -
Firefighters faced a serious situation at a south Indianapolis house fire Wednesday night.
They arrived at the Ithaca Way address in the Edgewood Trace subdivision in Franklin Township shortly before 10:30 p.m. to find fire coming out of the garage and front of the two-story house. They also heard ammunition exploding in the garage.
Nina Gregory and her three children had already left the burning house, so firefighters took a defensive approach to the fire until all the ammo had detonated. It took 45 minutes for the crews to mark the fire under control. But that was after it took its toll in an estimated $200-thousand in damage.
Madelyn Taylor lives nearby and recognized the sound of gunshots, then saw the flames coming from the house. "I opened my front door, and could see them over the top of the other house," Taylor said.
Gregory told IFD she heard a loud sound come from the garage area, then her son checked the garage and found fire. Gregory's two pets also made it out safely. They are going to stay with family.
Lt. Larry Tracy of IFD said ammunition detonating is not a common occurrence at fire scenes, but recommends homeowners store ammo in a fireproof safe. "Try to store it around things that are not combustible," he said.
