Hammond group, officials set tree-cutting limits

HAMMOND -

A northwestern Indiana group trying to halt a plan to cut down 3,400 trees in a bog at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore has reached a temporary agreement with government officials on the project.

Environmental officials agreed Tuesday not to cut trees in the easternmost part of the project area until March 1 or a further court order, whichever comes first.

The Times of Munster reports officials also agreed to assign no more than 12 staff members per day to the tree removal process without first providing a 2-week notice of any staff increase.

Court records state that in return, members of the Coalition to Protect Cowles Bog Area have agreed to withdraw their motion for preliminary injunction.

The group's federal lawsuit seeking to halt the tree-removal continues.
