INDIANAPOLIS -

Police are still looking for a hit-and-run driver who seriously injured an Indianapolis teenager last November.

As 13-year-old Karmyn Jones recovered in the hospital, her mother didn't know if the girl would survive her injuries.

"She was having trouble breathing, she had all these tubes in her and it was really touch-and-go for awhile," said Charlotte Jones.

A westbound driver struck Karmyn around 6 p.m. on November 16, 2012 as she walked eastbound in the 2500 block of Westlane Road with a group of friends. Police say the suspect vehicle is a 1992-99 white Chevrolet Suburban with front end damage.

"Anything that looks unusual, especially if it's a white Chevy Suburban in that date range with a 'W' on the plate," said Detective Zachary Olson with IMPD's Hit and Run Unit.

Statistics say Olson stands a good chance of locating the driver. Since 2009, the IMPD Hit and Run Unit has caught 70 percent of their suspects.

A hit and run investigation puzzle starts with car parts left behind at the scene. Then, detectives start with forensics to build their case.

"Do DNA from the car and we will have the person that is the victim of this crime and be able to match those up. Headlights, body works on cars," said IMPD Lt. George Crooks.

In Karmyn's case, detectives are also counting on publicity about the driver's car and his actions. An eyewitness followed the driver to an insurance company's parking lot on W. 71st Street. The driver put his hands up like he was going to stop, but suddenly took off north on Michigan Road.

"Your conscience should not allow you to stay out there and not turn yourself in," said the victim's mother.

Karmyn's mother says until her daughter's suspect is caught, no one walking on any street is safe.
