INDIANAPOLIS -

A development group says Indiana's life sciences industry employs 55,000 workers paying average wages of more than $88,000 per year.

The Indianapolis Business Journal reports Indianapolis-based BioCrossroads released figures Tuesday that also show the total economic impact of the industry at $50 billion a year. The Indiana Business Research Center at Indiana University calculated the figures from 2011 and 2012 data.

The industry includes the corporate headquarters of drugmaker Eli Lilly and Co., health insurer WellPoint., device maker Cook Medical, agro-tech company Dow AgroSciences and orthopedic implant makers Biomet, DePuy Orthopaedics and Zimmer Holdings.

BioCrossroads' chief executive David Johnson says the data show's Indiana's life sciences industry is in the same league of such other centers of health care innovation as Massachusetts, California, North Carolina and New Jersey.
