IFD called to car fire in American United Life Building garage

INDIANAPOLIS -

Indianapolis firefighters were called to the parking garage in the American United Life Building to put out a car fire Tuesday morning.

Crews were dispatched at around 8:22 am to One American Square in downtown Indianapolis. The fire was in a car parked three levels down in the garage beneath the high-rise office building.

The fire filled the garage with heavy black smoke and activated the sprinkler system. That helped stop the fire from spreading, but it didn't extinguish the fire. Firefighters had it under control in about 20 minutes and used ventilation fans to move the smoke out before it got into the building's ventilation system.

Traffic on Illinois Street was restricted but still had one lane open, and the offices of the high-rise building were not evacuated.
