Woman attacked by dog on northeast side

Posted: Updated:

An 86-year-old woman was hospitalized after a dog attack on the Indianapolis northeast side Sunday afternoon.

Police were called to the scene in the 5700 block of Oxford Street around 2:00 pm on a report of a woman being mauled by a dog.

When the officer arrived at the home, he saw a large pit bull mix attacking the woman. The officer used pepper spray on the dog, but it had no effect.

The officer distracted the dog, which turned its attention on the officer and began to lunge towards him. The officer had to shoot the dog three times to stop the animal from attacking him.

The woman was taken to Wishard Hospital in serious condition with severe injuries from dog bites on her arms and legs. Animal Control removed the dog's body for examination.
