Six injured in school bus crash on Indianapolis northeast side - 13 WTHR Indianapolis

A school bus was involved in a collision with a truck at E. 56th and Allisonville Road Friday afternoon.

The students were from the Indiana Math and Science Academy North, a charter school that serves students from kindergarten to twelfth grade.

The bus was headed south on Allisonville Road at around 3:40 pm turning east (left) on East 56th Street when it was rear-ended by a pickup truck driven by 34-year-old Brian Theiman. The truck is owned by Gardens of Growth Landscape Company.

Forty-four students were on the bus at the time of the crash and six had minor injuries. Three patients were taken to Methodist Hospital and three others were transported to Riley.

The injured students on the bus ranged in age from nine to 16 years old. Uninjured students were transferred to another bus.

Theiman was treated at the scene for a small cut on his face and released. The bus was driven by 27-year-old Matthew Dillon, who has been driving for Student Transit for six months. He was not injured.

The uninjured students were shaken up by their experience. Some were crying. One mother told us her daughter called her using a friend's cell phone. The woman was able to pick up her daughter at the scene.

"Glad she's okay, for sure," the woman said. She was eager to get her daughter home and calmed down.

Metro police are continuing their investigation of the crash.
