Bosma seeks jobs panel, pre-K money

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma says Indiana can begin closing its skills gaps by coordinating programs through a new jobs council led by the governor and providing scholarships for 3- and 4-year-olds to attend pre-school.

Bosma delivered the details of the House Republican agenda this session in an interview with The Associated Press Wednesday.

The 15-member jobs council would operate much like Indiana's Education Roundtable and spend the year investigating what high-wage jobs are available and what skills workers need. Bosma is also proposing the state spend roughly $7 million a year on a pilot program that would give scholarships to 1,000 children to attend pre-school.

Republican and Democratic leaders in the Statehouse have said the state needs to find ways to place residents in vacant jobs.
