A tax increase on tickets and rental cars passed out of committee Tuesday.
The controversial tax increase is headed to the Indianapolis City-County Council for approval. The $6.7 million raised each year by the new tax will go to police, fire and the upkeep of Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
The plan is to raise the ticket tax to ten percent. That's a 67-percent increase. It also calls for bumping the rental tax to 17 percent, a 12-percent increase.
At the airport, where additional taxes and fees are added in, the tax rate is already 26 percent.
The increase is an attempt by the city to balance its budget. Visit Indy says a record number of 22 million people came to Indianapolis during the Super Bowl year of 2012, bringing in $3.9 billion in revenue.
