Central Indiana judge to review gravely ill man's care

NOBLESVILLE -

A central Indiana judge has scheduled an emergency hearing to review the case of a gravely ill 88-year-old man who's the subject of a family dispute over his medical care.

Wednesday's hearing before the Hamilton County judge was requested by one of Paul G. Smith's daughters.

The Indianapolis Star reports Susan Rissman contends in a motion filed Monday that the Carmel man's life "may be lost" due to his medical care at an Indianapolis hospital.

Rissman says her father was removed last week from a ventilator that helped ease breathing for the retired attorney and former Hamilton County magistrate.

She says nutrition supplied through a feeding tube was stopped the following day. Both actions apparently were based on directives from Smith's living will and another of his daughters.
