INDIANAPOLIS -

An early morning fire at the Port O' Call Apartments on the far west side displaced a mother and her four children from their first floor apartment, plus two men in an upstairs apartment.

Wayne Township, IFD and Speedway crews were all battling the fire, which was called in at approximately 1:45 a.m.  Firefighters found heavy fire in the downstairs apartment on Port O' Call Drive, with flames lapping up the side of the building.

Everybody had already made their way out of the building before firefighters arrived.

Capt. Mike Pruitt of WTFD said it took 60 firefighters 15 minutes to gain control of the fire.  In all, three units sustained approximately $50,000 in smoke and fire damage. Investigators have determined the cause of the fire to be electrical. Residents are being assisted by Wayne Township Victims Assistance.

Firefighters were not hindered by sub-freezing temperatures. "We did have one hydrant the froze open, but that's not a bad thing. I'd rather it freeze open than freeze shut," Pruitt said.
