Fort Wayne mayor wants to move obscured statue

Posted: Updated:
FORT WAYNE -

The mayor of Fort Wayne wants to move a statue of the northeastern Indiana city's namesake from Freimann Square to a more visible location and believes the Courthouse Green might be the perfect location.

Mayor Tom Henry says the statue of Gen. Anthony Wayne is obscured by canopy of trees. He says many people in Fort Wayne don't even know the massive statue dedicated in 1918 is there. It was moved downtown in 1973 and the trees around it have grown and make it difficult to see.

The Allen County Courthouse Preservation Trust, which raised funds for the renovation of the courthouse and the purchase and creation of the Courthouse Green, opposes the move, saying it could cause others to also place things on the green.
