Chris Bond made two free throws with 1 second left, lifting Ball State to a 60-58 victory over Eastern Michigan on Wednesday night in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams.
Bond, who scored 18 points on 8-of-8 shooting for the Cardinals (7-6), was fouled by Da'Shonte Riley and sank both foul shots. Eastern Michigan couldn't get off another shot before the buzzer.
Jauwan Scaife also scored 18 and made four 3-pointers for Ball State, which led most of the game and shot 58.5 percent from the field but didn't make a field goal after Bond's jumper with 4:26 to play. Eastern Michigan tied the game with a 10-2 run, capped by two Jalen Ross free throws with 8 seconds left, before Bond won it.
Derek Thompson scored 16 points and J.R. Sims had 12 for the Eagles (7-8), who won both their games against the Cardinals last season.
